It was widely held in Punjab that the birth of a girl child in a household was auspicious. When she was born, her mother and grandma began embroidering Phulkari dupattas because they felt she would be the creator for future generations. Originally done with actual flowers, this design is now done on chiffon and lightweight cotton.
